5 Great Winter Activities in Muskegon

Muskegon Winter Sports Complex

One of our favorite things about living in Michigan is the changing of the seasons.  As soon as you are tired of one thing, it changes and there are a whole new set of adventures to be had.  Winter, for all its challenges, is such a beautiful time of year in Michigan.   For those that have braved the cold and ice of a Michigan winter, there is a great reward in the fun and adventure that awaits!

One of our favorite places to visit during winter is the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park, also known as the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex, in North Muskegon.  This park offers many activities for the novice adventurer all the way up to the advanced level.   Here are our 5 favorite things to do during a winter adventure at the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park.

#5 Enjoy the View

Winter in Michigan is truly a beautiful season.  With a crisp blanket of snow, the forest is transformed into a magical place.  Due to Muskegon’s location on the west Michigan lakeshore, the park enjoys a fair amount of “lake effect” snow.  With its mix of forest trails and Lake Michigan vistas, this park is a great place to take in the beauty of the season and enjoy the view!

Michigan Snowshoe

#4 Snowshoeing

While hiking the park trails is one or our favorite year round activities, once the lake effect snow machine is in full force this can be challenging.  Grab a pair of snowshoes and problem solved!  If you have never snowshoed before you are truly missing out.  It is a great way to navigate the park trail system and takes very little practice to master.  The park offers snowshoe rental for an affordable price, and you do not need any additional equipment to partake in this activity.  There are several snowshoe trails available ranging from the easy Woods loop, for beginners, all the way to the more advanced 5K Lost Lake Loop which covers the perimeter of the park!

#3 Cross Country Skiing

If you enjoy cross country skiing the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park offers some of the best in the area.  There are 15 kilometers of marked and groomed ski trails available for adventuring.  The trails range in skill levels from beginner to advanced, so there is something for everyone.  And the best part is that these trails are lighted until 10pm nightly!  So even though the day light hours are shorter, you can still get out and enjoy this outdoor activity!  As with snowshoeing, the park offers ski rental at an affordable price.  Also, private lessons are available if you want to improve your skills.

#2 Ice Skating

Who doesn’t love ice skating!  The park offers some great options if you are a fan.  There is a rink available for playing hockey and family skating.  However, our favorite skating option is the ¼ mile figure-eight loop that winds through the forest.  It is a one-of-a-kind experience!  Both skating options are open from 10am to 9:45pm, weather permitting, and lighted every night.  The ice here is natural so you may want to check the website or call ahead to verify ice conditions are good.  Also, as always, don’t worry if you are lacking in equipment the park has rentals to fit your needs.  In addition to skates, they also rent hockey equipment!

#1  Luge

And the number one reason to visit the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is right in the name.  One of only four luge tracks in the country this is one of the most unique winter activities available.  The track was designed by an Olympian to allow the general public to experience the thrill of Olympic style luging.  The track is 850ft long and participants luge at speeds of up to 30 mph!  If this sounds intimidating to you, don’t worry, the park provides equipment and training to all participants and each weekend they offer a 2.5 hour learn to luge session so you can safely join in the fun.  What could be better than feeling like an Olympian for the day!

The Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is really an amazing winter adventure!  If you are looking to just get out of the house and have an adventure this is the place for you!  You can bring your own equipment if you have it or rent equipment if you want to try something new.  The park offers season passes and family passes to help keep the cost down.  Be aware that you will need a state park pass to enter the park, but they do offer day passes if you don’t have one already.  Please check the website for daily conditions at the park before you head out.  At Mi Tees we celebrate everything Michigan and the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park is truly a Michigan adventure!
